HOME TURF
Glossop’s terms
Heavy Glossop clay, rain off the hills, gardens on a slope. None of it’s a problem if you plant for it. On clay the answer is nearly always organic matter, and I plant in autumn where I can, so roots settle before summer asks anything of them. Right plant, right place.
LOCAL WORK
A 1960s community garden that had lost its way. We mounded it up on gritty soil and mulched it with gravel from my Sandringham show garden, so the show garden got a second life down the road. It made the front page of the Glossop Chronicle.
What I do in Glossop
Garden design first, with a florist’s eye: I plant for what you could cut and bring in, and for how a border looks up close.
DESIGN
The whole garden rethought, from survey to planting plan.
PLANTING
Planting design
Good bones, tired planting? New borders that do more all year.
FROM £950
A rectangle of turf and a fence, turned into a garden.
CARE
Looking after your garden as it grows, the way it was meant to.
How it works
STEP 1
A brew and a chat
We talk about your garden, how you use it and what you’d love it to be.
STEP 2
Visit and survey
I come and look properly: soil, light, slope, and what’s already thriving.
STEP 3
The design
A layout and planting plan made for your garden, tweaked until it feels right.
STEP 4
Planting and care
I plant it up, and I can keep looking after it as it settles in.
Every garden starts with a brew. No hard sell, just a proper look at what you’ve got and what it could be.
Good to know.
Where do you work?
Glossop, Old Glossop, Simmondley, Gamesley, Hadfield and Charlesworth, plus Hayfield, New Mills, Disley, Marple, Marple Bridge, Mellor, Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Buxton. For bigger gardens I’ll happily go further: Bramhall, Poynton, Prestbury, Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Hale, Bowdon, Saddleworth and the Hope Valley.
Can you work with heavy clay?
Yes. Clay is fertile and holds water well. It just needs organic matter worked in, and plants that don’t mind wet feet in winter.
What does it cost?
New-build gardens start from £950. Bigger gardens are priced once I’ve seen them, because every garden is different. The first chat is free.
When is a good time to start?
Autumn and winter are good for design, so you’re ready to plant in autumn or spring.
Can you look after it too?
Yes. Garden stewardship is local only, and Glossop is where most of it happens.
