GARDEN & PLANTING DESIGN

A garden you can step into.

Thoughtful, expressive gardens designed around the people who live in them. I bring structure and wildness together to make spaces that feel good to be in, and only get better with time.

Three ways in

Start from scratch, start with the plants, or start with what’s there.

FROM SCRATCH

Garden design

I can take your garden from first conversation through site survey, concept, layout and detailed planting design. A clear design with enough structure to hold it together and enough freedom to develop a life of its own.

PLANTS FIRST

Planting design

Layered planting built around texture, movement, seasonality and atmosphere. Plant communities chosen to suit your conditions and to evolve through the year, with the occasional botanical oddity.

GOOD BONES

Garden redesign

You don’t always need to start again. I reshape existing spaces through new planting, selective editing and carefully chosen interventions, keeping what works and rethinking what doesn’t.

Good to know.

What's the difference between garden design and planting design?

Garden design looks at the whole garden: layout, structure, materials and planting. Planting design keeps the structure you already have and rethinks the plants.

Do I have to start from scratch?

No. If the garden has good bones, I can reshape it with new planting, selective editing and refreshed materials, keeping what works and rethinking what doesn't.

What sort of gardens do you design?

Private gardens mostly, along with shared and community spaces. My planting is layered and seasonal, chosen for the conditions you actually have and for its ecological value as well as its looks.

Will you help once it's planted?

Yes. I'll give you advice on getting the planting established, and for gardens in Glossop, the High Peak and the Peak District I offer garden stewardship to look after it as it grows.

Tell me about your garden, your day or the feeling you're after. No brief needed.
